As Jagex Accounts are brand new we know you might have some questions so we've compiled some frequently asked questions here to help you get started.
What is a Jagex account?
A Jagex account allows you to bring up to 20 characters together under one login, protected by much stronger account security. Once upgraded your RuneScape login details will be completely replaced by your brand-new Jagex account credentials. You'll need to access Jagex games via the Jagex Launcher or a mobile device.
How do I create a Jagex account?
To create a Jagex account you'll either need to follow these steps to upgrade your existing RuneScape character or Create a Jagex account and link your characters later.
In the near future, all new characters will need to be created via a Jagex account.
When can I create a Jagex account?
Jagex Accounts are available to everyone! If you log in to your Account settings page you will see an Upgrade Now button above your account settings.
How do I log in to my Jagex account?
You'll use a login email address to access your account, this will be the email address you created your Jagex account with and will replace your pre-existing RuneScape credentials. You can change your login email at any time.

I have a RuneScape account, why can't I log in to the Launcher?
To ensure our players have the best security possible, from November 7th 2023 all new players will require a Jagex Account to access the Jagex Launcher.
When you see the message "Have a RuneScape account? You'll need to make a few changes." follow the prompts to upgrade to a Jagex Account.
Jagex accounts unify all your characters under one easy login and provide enhanced security. They also come with the added benefit of 20 extra bank spaces in Old School, and an increased AFK timer in RuneScape!
If you have an existing RuneScape account logged in, you will not be impacted by this until you log out, at which point you'll need to upgrade.
Do I have to create a Jagex account to play RuneScape?
For now, it's entirely up to you whether you upgrade to a Jagex account or not. Upgrading to a Jagex account comes with some great features and enhanced security. While it's currently optional, we do have plans to make Jagex Accounts mandatory in the future.
How will Jagex Accounts improve account security?
The Jagex account system offers a secure, centralised location for accessing all of our games and comes with some key security features.

If you're unable to log in via your usual method and have backup codes activated, you can use a backup code to sign in to your Jagex account. |
How do I recover my Jagex account?
If you've forgotten your email address or password follow the steps provided here to recover your Jagex account.
How do membership and in-game purchases work with a Jagex account?
All purchases including membership are made at the character level. When you log in to the payment basket you'll be asked to select which character you'd like to make the purchase on. Any purchased membership will be applied to both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape versions of the game for that character.
Which platforms support Jagex Accounts?
With a Jagex account, you can play Jagex games via the Launcher from devices running Windows and macOS or via our Mobile apps.
Is it possible to use a Jagex account with Linux?
Jagex accounts can only access the game via the Launcher. While the Jagex Launcher is not natively supported on Linux there are some community projects that might help you to play.

Can I play via RuneLite with a Jagex account?
Yes. You can access RuneLite through the Launcher.
Can I use any third-party client with my Jagex account?
With a Jagex account, you'll need to access our games through the Launcher or our Mobile apps. The Jagex Launcher only supports our official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape Clients and RuneLite.
Can I log in to a Jagex Account via Steam?
After importing a character to your Jagex Account, you can still play it through the Steam client. However, you can only link one character per Steam account, and it will not grant access to other characters on your Jagex account. Make sure to enable Steam Guard to protect your Steam account.
Will I be able to log into multiple RuneScape characters at once?
Yes, the Launcher lets you run multiple game clients simultaneously.
Can I play the same character in both RuneScape and Old School simultaneously?
No. You can choose to play with your character on either RuneScape or Old School. You can play RuneScape and Old School simultaneously if you're using different characters.
Will I be able to have multiple Jagex Accounts simultaneously logged into the Launcher?
As you can add up to 20 characters to a single Jagex account we're hoping that's all you'll ever need. At launch, you'll only be able to log in to the Launcher with one Jagex account at a time, we’re looking for feedback on whether the number of slots we’re offering is correct for most players.

Does the Jagex Launcher need Admin access?
Yes, requiring Admin access is the best practice for both device and client security. We cannot confirm that this requirement will be removed, but are keeping an eye on player feedback around this.
